What to do first:
 
Telephone funeral home to see if pre-arrangements have been made.
 
Notify clergy, relatives and friends.
 
Funeral Home Consultation Visit:
 
Confirm month, day and year of birth. 
 
Confirm correct spelling of decedent’s  mother’s and father’s name.
 
Provide social security number for the death certificate. 
 
Locate original or copy of the veteran's discharge papers. 
 
Take complete outer and under garments, jewelry and personal cosmetics for deceased. 
 
Funeral Arrangements:
 
Determine date and time of visitation.
 
Determine time and place of funeral or memorial service.
 
Confirm dates, times and offering to be paid with clergy.
 
If not already completed, arrange to purchase cemetery property.
 
Provide cemetery information with location, lot number and grave number.
 
Select a casket, vault or urn.
 
Meet with the florist to select flowers to cover casket (pall).
 
Ask four to six friends or family members to be pallbearers.
 
Select music to be performed live, or choose recorded music.
   
Select an organization and provide and address for memorial contributions.
 
If needed for veteran's service, request flag to be present in visitation room and request honor guard.
 
Provide name of newspaper in which obituary should appear and provide survivor information and service details.
  
Make arrangements for out of town guests.
  
Notify schools, employers, banks, lawyers and insurance companies of the death.
 
Visitation:
 
Arrive at funeral home one half-hour before visitors.
 
If using photographs, arrange in visitation room.
 
Choose an adult to be with children during visitation hours.
   
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
 
After the service:
 
Order additional thank-you notes as needed.
 
Take flowers home or to local churches, hospitals or nursing homes.
 
Order additional death certificates, if needed.
   
Speak with a monument/marker company.
 
Provide certified copies of death certificates to life insurance companies.
 
Notify the Social Security Administration.
 
Speak with The Department of Veteran's Affairs regarding veterans' markers.
