Mr Troy Preston Wilcher

Troy Preston Wilcher Carthage, MS November 16, 1928 – January 15, 2025 Funeral services for Troy Preston Wilcher, affectionally known as Papaw Troy, will be held Friday, January 17, 2025. The visitation will be held at Wilcox Funeral Home, Carthage, MS from 12:00 -2:00 pm. Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. at Ebenezer Cemetery with Rev. Don Cook officiating. Troy departed this life on January 15, 2025, at Madden Lighthouse after a short illness and due to his Alzheimer’s diagnosis years ago. Troy celebrated his 96th birthday on November 16, 2024. He was born in Leake County where he spent most of his life. Troy married Cassie Newson on April 15, 1951. They were married 71 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and the Army National Guard until his discharge on May 23, 1958. Troy spent over forty (40) years in the poultry industry. He retired at the age of 62 and opened his own gun shop where he worked on guns for people in Leake County and several surrounding counties. Even gunsmiths would bring their guns to Troy when they could not figure out the problem. Troy was preceded in death by his wife Cassie Newsom Wilcher; his parents Thurman L. Wilcher and Betty Fortune Wilcher; brothers Otha Wilcher, Fletcher (Pete) Wilcher, R. L. Wilcher and sister Evelyn Burchfield. He is survived by daughter, Sherry Thornton (Danny); son, Johnny P Wilcher (Pam); three grandchildren, Melissa Warren (Stan); Stephanie Risher (Brad); and Josh Moore (Liz). Six great grandchildren Jordan Warren; Ethan Warren; Gage Warren, Emma Risher, Every Risher and Madison Moore. The family would like to express their utmost gratitude to the staff at Baptist Leake, Dr. Perry and Dr. Jackson, sitters Mary Gilmer, Mary Francis Collier, Shelia Barnes, Sharon Barnes, Deby Harrell, Cindy Burchfield Spears and we will be forever grateful to the staff at Gloria Devine Angels Homecare (Carthage, MS), that helped take care of him during last days. Quality Hospice, as normal, provided him with care, respect, dignity, and understanding. We especially want to thank all the staff at Madden Lighthouse during his 15-month stay. You treated him like family and loved him as we did. Thank you to all!!!! We love each and every one of you. Pallbearers are: Harry Beckham, Steve Chipley, Allen Byrd, Austin Byrd, Adam Byrd, and Jimmy Wilcher. Honorary pallbearer is Kevin Wilcher.
